Psychiatry

Psychiatry is the branch of medicine focused on diagnosing, treating, and preventing mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders.

A psychiatrist is a doctor (an M.D. or D.O.) specializing in mental health, including substance use disorders. Psychiatrists are qualified to assess both the mental and physical aspects of psychological problems.

People seek psychiatric help for many reasons. The problems can be sudden, such as a panic attack, frightening hallucinations, thoughts of suicide, or hearing “voices.” Or they may be more long-term, such as feelings of sadness, hopelessness, or anxiousness that never seem to lift or problems functioning, causing everyday life to feel distorted or out of control.

We also offer advanced services to diagnose and treat conditions to better help you with your condition. These services include:

  • Botulinum toxin (commonly referred to as “Botox”) injections
Botox is approved and effective for treating chronic migraine headaches in select people aged 18 and older who experience 15 or more migraine days per month. Botox injections block specific chemical signals from nerves that cause muscles to contract. This makes Botox very effective at relieving pain and discomfort caused by dystonia which is a movement disorder that causes the muscles to contract involuntarily. Finally, Botox is used for spasticity which is a condition of abnormal increased muscle tone or stiffness, which can occur after brain or spinal cord injuries such as strokes.

  • Nerve blocks
Nerve blocks are injections near specific nerves that help prevent or manage many different types of pain. They are injections of medicines that block pain and remove inflammation from specific nerves.

  • Electromyography (EMG) testing
Electromyography is a diagnostic test to assess the health and function of muscles and the nerve cells that control them. EMG test can reveal how the nerves and muscles are transmitting signals. EMG studies are used to help diagnose a variety of muscle and nerve disorders.

  • Nerve Conduction Study
A nerve conduction study, another part of an EMG, measures the strength and speed of signals traveling between two or more points on a nerve. It assesses how well the nerve works and determines if anything is affecting the signals.

  • Neuromuscular Ultrasound
Neuromuscular ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to look at nerves and muscles in real-time to assess their appearance and anatomy. When nerves and muscles become injured or diseased, they change shape, size, and color. Ultrasound helps diagnose many conditions.

  • Electroencephalography (EEG)
An EEG is a test that measures the electrical activity of the brain. It is used to detect abnormalities in your brain waves. During the procedure, electrodes consisting of small metal discs with thin wires are pasted onto the scalp. The electrodes detect tiny electrical charges resulting from your brain cells’ activity.

  • Trigger Point Injections
Trigger point injection is a procedure used to treat painful areas in a muscle that contain trigger points or knots of muscle that form when muscles spasm from injury or stress. Trigger points irritate the nerves around them and can cause referred pain or pain that is felt in another part of the body.

  • Lumbar punctures/Spinal Tap
A lumbar puncture (spinal tap) is a test where a needle is inserted into the space between two lumbar bones (vertebrae) to remove a sample of cerebrospinal fluid, which is used to diagnose certain health conditions such as infections (including meningitis/encephalitis) and other disorder of the central nervous system, including multiple sclerosis, as well as the peripheral nervous system (Guillain-Barre syndrome), or cancers of the brain and spinal cord.

  • On-site Laboratory
We have a laboratory on site that provides blood and specimen testing. This makes getting testing done more convenient for you and allows us to get complete information to make the correct diagnosis quicker to deliver the best care faster.

  • In-house Infusion Center
Infusion therapy makes it possible to receive treatments not available in pill form directly into your veins. Infusion is also known as intravenous or IV therapy. Having your infusion treatments in our office is a more convenient, comfortable, and accessible setting where we can better monitor your progress. And infusion treatments at outpatient facilities are significantly more cost-effective than treatment at a hospital.
